Light a candle inside this lantern and a quiet figure appears in the glass. A stone angel stands beside a weathered cross, autumn leaves drifting all around her, glowing softly as the flame warms her from behind. It is one of the most atmospheric pieces we have had in the shop this fall.
This metal and glass candle lantern stands a generous 24 inches tall and 9 inches wide, big enough to hold its own on a hearth, a porch, or the end of a long dining table. The dark bronze-toned frame is topped with graceful scrolled arms that sweep up to a fleur-de-lis finial and a round hanging ring. A single metal leaf drops down from the center, and the whole thing rests on four little scrolled feet.
A picture that waits for the light
The real magic is in the glass. The panels carry a sepia and softly tinted image of a churchyard angel, the kind of statue you might find in an old garden or a quiet cemetery at the edge of town. In daylight she is subtle, almost hidden behind the reflections. Once a pillar candle is glowing inside, she comes forward, with golden light pooling through her robes and the leaves around her.
That makes this lantern a lovely fit for the season we are heading into. Set it among pumpkins and bittersweet for October, bring it inside for the long evenings of November, or use it all year as a gentle, reflective accent in a reading nook or entryway. It works just as well in a garden room as it does beside a fireplace.
Pieces with this much mood are hard to capture in a photograph, so we hope you’ll come see it glow for yourself. Stop by Pollyanna’s Antiques at 287 North Avenue in downtown Mt. Clemens. We’re open Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday, 10 to 4.
